Disabling Microphone Passthrough (Windows)
If when your mic is live, you transmit sound coming from your computer (for example, WoW combat noises), this is relatively easy to fix.
- Double-click the volume (speaker) icon in your system tray.
- Click on Options > Properties
- Click Recording (under "Adjust Volume For"), make sure that all the various device boxes under it are checked, and hit okay.
- Check the "Select" box under "Microphone", assuring that nothing else is checked.
- Congratulations, you no longer annoy your guildmates with "I need more rage" in the background of your demands for healing.

Normalizing Ventrilo Output (Windows only)
Some people are quiet. Some people are loud. Some people change from day to day and minute to minute. This fixes that.
- Open up the Setup menu.
- Make sure the Use DirectSound box is checked.
- Click to SFX button.
- Making sure that the Type selection is on Sound Effects, highlight Compressor in the right column, and click the <- Add button.
- Open up Properties for the Compressor, and adjust the settings.
- Gain determines how loud people are. Play with this to get things sounding right to you (the 5-15 range seems to suit most people best)
- Shift Attack all the way down to 0.01.
- Move Release down to around 500 (don't feel like you need to be exact).
- Threshold should be around -30.
- Ratio should be maxed out at 100.
- Pre-delay should be at the maximum 4.0.
- Hit OK until you get rid of all the menus and enjoy your ventrilo all over again.
