The game of kings.

Game Theory is a World of Warcraft guild on the Proudmoore server, Alliance. We are focused on end-game Raiding Progression and the 25 man raiding meta-achievement in the WoW expansion pack, Wrath of the Lich King. Our primary goal is to progress through all of the content that Blizzard can throw at us before it becomes outdated (those of you who were unable to complete Naxx before TBC shipped know what we mean).

Application Information

Game Theory is not currently recruiting. We have suspended progression raiding until Cataclysm.

2010-04-07 Icecrown Citadel: Heroic (10)

So ya, Morrowgar or whatever.. wow, hard, we had to easy mode him after a few too many wipes. We are going to have to do a bit more research on that one. Lady, dead. Gunship.. still a pinata.

Update 2010-05-06: What's that you say? Videos or it didn't happen?

Let's ignore for the moment that neither Krok nor Night appear in those, and congratulate them on their guild-firsts. :-)

2010-03-25 Icecrown Citadel: Sindragosa Betrayed by Pathetic Magic! (25)

Planning? Execution? Totally unnecessary for this one. We like just sorta ran at her and went all gonzo zerg and she fell over. Okay, not really. Rather the opposite. We got through her, now I need to research a group dental plan for all the healer teeth that were lost on our progression attempts. I hear one of our raiders did record a video, so hopefully it will be linked here soon.

Who's next? I forget. Some minor noble with severe megalomania and an unhealthy interest in the occult...what's his name again?

Enough said.

I can post that right? I think so, ya, ok then.

2010-03-02 Icecrown Citadel: Blood-Queen Lana'thel Abdicates (25)!

Much like our progression kill on Festergut, this one was roughly simultaneous with the enrage timer. Unlike the progression kill on Festergut, the majority of the raid was alive afterwards. This fight isn't just about doing your general job as a raider within the bounds of the generally accepted strategy; active teamwork to squeeze out those last few bits of damage is required. (At least until we outgear the thing.)

Oh, and metric tons of HoTs. Those are pretty nifty too.

Bonus: Kill video by Lelenia.

2010-02-16 Icecrown Citadel: Valithria Dreamwalker Walks Again (25)!

We'd been pushing 85% for a while. As the non-Priest portion of our healing crew figured out how to maintain their stacks of the critical buff, we had an episode of "Heroism in five, four, thr--what, we won?!" It took many of us by surprise. It's refreshing to have a fight where the healers can actually shorten it in the good way.

Next up: The login boss. Er, I mean, Sindragosa. I think we'll kill her just to make her shut up.

2010-02-15 Icecrown Citadel: Professor Putricide Loses Tenure (25)!

In our earlier pulls we were running 7 healers to increase raid survival. While this was all nice and good, we found that we were consistently dying to his enrage. Swap out one healer for one DPS, and have the healers (translated: Discipline Priests) actively collude with the Arcane Mages to increase damage, and we finally got him down with a minute and change to spare. Unsurprisingly two-thirds of the raid had died, but I hear that's what happens on progression kills of the Professor. Bad news, everyone! I made a bonus kill video!

2010-01-27 Icecrown Citadel: Professor Putricide And The Blood Prince Council Down (10)!

We'd been getting Putricide down into the single digits for a few weeks; his time had come. The raid got off to a bit of a late start, but once we zoned in we made a beeline for the plagueworks and downed him on the second try. We used a different positioning than we had previously; Stein suggested on the boards that we tank the Professor essentially on top of the green ooze spawn point; this allows all DPS to switch to it as soon as it comes out, kill it quickly, and get back on the boss. Orange would be kited roughly the same as normal. It seemed to work really well - we shaved an entire ooze spawn off of our p1!

For dessert we killed the Blood Prince Council and got a few tries in on the Blood Queen. Great fun!

2010-01-21 Icecrown Citadel: Blood Prince Council Disbanded (25)!

Given our experiences of previous evenings, and the misinformation we've seen out there on various web sites, we decided to do a few pulls of SCIENCE -- intentionally doing things in weird ways to determine how some of their spells really worked. Once we decided that Valanar was too much of an attention whore, we told our melee to torture him by blatantly ignoring him, thus removing a significant source of chaos from the fight. A few refinements later, they fell over, and we didn't.

Next up: Blood-Queen Lana'thel. I have a Smite button and I'm not afraid to use it on angsty sparkly vampires.

2010-01-10 Icecrown Citadel: Festergut Gutted, Rotface Defaced (25)!

Good news, everyone! We've broken the poison slime pipes! In a real nail-biter, Festergut's last sliver of health was removed a mere fraction of a second after he enraged. So only half the raid got insta-gibbed. Messy but satisfying. A few refinements and we should be able to get this comfortably. His neighbor Rotface is tougher on the execution, but much easier on the raw numbers. Soon we'll be using Rotface to mop up his own slime. The experiences we've had against these bosses in 10-player raids have really paid off.

Next up: Professor Putricide. That's no ordinary gas cloud...

2009-12-13 Icecrown Citadel: Storming the Citadel (25)!

And later that week, Lady Deathwhisper was muted, the Horde gunship Orgrim's Hammer was shot down (one-shot!), and Deathbringer Saurfang got a taste of his own medicine. Next up: waiting for useful screenshots (all of mine stink) and for Blizzard to release the next wing of the citadel.

--Fatima

2009-12-10 Icecrown Citadel: Lord Marrowgar Down (25)!

On the evening that Icecrown Citadel opened, we sent two crack 10-man squads to scout out the joint, and scout they did. This steroidal skeleton was reduced to frozen fossil with relative ease. Next up: how can you tell a lich is (was?) female when you can't see its pelvic structure?

2009-12-06 Trial of the Grand Crusader: Faction Champions Down! /spit x 25

It's all about convincing the enemy AI where you want it to send the damage. It took 16+ minutes but we had half the raid up at the end, which is considerably better than our progression kill on the Northrend Beasts (see below).

And then we visited the Twins and promptly said, "Hm, there appears to be a lot of raid da*SPLAT*". But I think we can work something out.

Well, I guess you could say the stars finally aligned.............O'R'lyeh?.......Ya'R'lyeh!

After a 10 ToGC run we went in to Ulduar with a rather determined group. We plowed through FL + 0 and XT normal to make sure we had enough time against the big guy. We stacked for melee synergy and brought in two fully geared tanks (welcome back Astore ;) ). Within 30 minutes, GT got to Phase 2 for the first time. It just took some minor tweaking to get it right and we finally downed the guy with 6 minutes to spare on the hour. I even had time to type that into guild chat before our achievements scrolled :D.

Also, this marks our first (that I know of) GT kill video. Make sure to check it out in HD to see our winning strat.

Correction: there have been other GT kill videos.

2009-11-30 Trial of the Grand Crusader: Lord Jaraxxus down (25)!

Mostly a test of the guild's collective control over the damage hose -- when to go slow and steady, and when to lay it on thick and bursty. The shocking secret: developing a plan which exploited our strengths and mitigated our risks, and executing it until it executed a demon. Now when we farm him, we face Jaraxxus, Eredar Former-Lord of Not Very Much Anymore.

They say any landing you can walk away from is a good one. --Alan Shepard and Launchpad McQuack
Talk about a nail-biter.

Our first heroic Northrend Beasts kill saw us with a nice clean P1, an almost-quick enough P2, and barely-but-not-quite-enough DPS to get us through P3 before the enrage. And enrage Icehowl did, right before performing a Massive Crash and killing everyone... except for me, who had Divine Protection and Pain Suppression up (thanks, Fatima!).

This left Icehowl stunned against the wall with about 200k HP. Tantryst and Shamadam ankh and we DPS like there's no tomorrow. Icehowl dies moments before coming out of stun.

One of the best (and sloppiest) kills. Every last bit of damage that everyone did made a difference. Great job sticking it out, GT.

You're welcome, Lelenia. P.S. Heroic Ferocious Butt!

I'm not really qualified to talk about all the effort that went into making this -- a near perfect ToGC10 run with only one (unfortunately avoidable) wipe at the beginning -- happen. I'll leave that to Naxxar.

2009-10-11 Ulduar: Rusted Proto-Drakes!

June 8th, 2009 was the first night I ran one of my Ulduar 10 man raids. According to the raid calendar just myself, Hitbox, and Burlyn showed up. I believe the raid was called. The following week I told people that I'd be attempting a Yogg 10 man kill over the course of two nights, that convinced more people to come and we downed Yogg on the second night of that week. Seeing as we hadn't downed Yogg in 25 man Ulduar yet, my raids finally gained some credibility and our long, twisty road towards our meta mounts began.

Last night, October 11th, 2009, four months after the first raid, we finally reached our goal!

Thanks to everyone that has supported us during this endeavor. To all the people that wanted their mounts, to all of the people that pitched in when we were short, to all the people that put up with my achievement whoring, to the two that left us (I miss you Hitbox and Burlyn), and to guild leadership for working out good times for me to do my raids so that there was time for 10s and 25s.

It's truly been a pleasure raid leading 10s over the past four months. I really missed raid leading in the TBC era and this gave me the push I needed to get back into raid leading not just in 10s but also in 25s. But our work is not done yet. Some of our guildies that have helped us through this still need their metas so I urge you to continue helping until all our regulars can fly very, very fast like a very, very fast thing.

Soon U10 raids will come to a close and I'll probably start running more ToC and possibly H ToC raids again (haven't had time lately) with a more achievement oriented slant. That will tide me over until Icecrown comes out and we (hopefully) get another raiding meta to shoot for. I'm hoping that we can all get Frost Wyrm mounts for that one.

Looking forward to leading you into the fray again.

It feels like we're brute-forcing this still. Our positioning tweaks and focus finally tipped the scales, but it still feels like we're going about it fundamentally wrong.

A good bit of effort by the team, though - we're now at 4/9 for Ulduar hardmodes.  :)
